So it is coming to that time of year again… the holidays! It can be exciting, maybe you have a vacation or two planned or are heading to some relative’s home to celebrate. Either way, this time of year can be filled with some extended traveling periods. This can feel like a difficult time, pumpkin pie aside, to eat healthy. Do you like road trips? Does sitting in the car or plane for hours make you hungry? …And do you feel like it can difficult to eat healthy while traveling? Of course! Who doesn’t? But don’t worry, I have your back. Over the years I’ve figured out the tips and tricks to beating the junk food dilemma while traveling. My best advice would be: be prepared and pack snacks ahead of time. There are plenty of options that you can throw in a lunch bag to have by your side incase the munchies come along on hour 3 of your 8 hour drive that won’t leave you feeling guilty after.
My favorite choice would have to be veggies and hummus. Cut up some celery sticks, slice a cucumber or chop up cauliflower to nibble on. All are great vegetables that are very low in calories. Paired with hummus, making it way more enjoyable you will have a great source of a little protein and is a better dipping alternative to ranch. Other options would be rice cakes and nut butter, neither need to be kept cool and you can find whole grain rice cakes that will keep you satiated along with the healthy fats of the nut butter! Another filling snack full of healthy fats is chia pudding, easy to throw together if you have a favorite recipe or you can buy them pre-made at the grocery store. My go-to brand is Mama Chia’s Chia Squeeze snack packs, they’re perfect to have on the-go and loaded with nutrients from real fruit and chia seeds.
However, if you’re one of the rare ones who doesn’t like to snack over long traveling periods (lucky you), making a lunch beforehand to have later can save you from having to choose among the desolate selection of fast food chains that dot the highways and airports. Yet in the event that neither happens to work in your favor I’ve compiled a list of options from the infamous fast food spots that aren’t so unhealthy, which you can find linked in your email from us. One of my favorite traditions of the holiday season is all of the cooking and baking, so keep an eye out for some delicious recipes coming soon!
